The main advantage of PGS (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis for single gene disease) is that, with this technology, we are able to improve reproductive success by carefully selecting the embryos that are chromosomally normal among all the other embryos of the patient.
PGS is normally performed on women who are of advanced maternal age, or on those who have had many miscarriages or the embryo has failed to implant itself on to the uterus. Infertility can also occur due to the male factors like low sperm count.
In PGS, 24 chromosomes are analysed so as to negate the possibility of having the wrong number of chromosomes in a cell before it is implanted. This is known as embryonic aneuploidy. Array Comparative Genomic Hybridization (aCGH) is when the chromosomes are analysed so it terminates the possibility of any genetic disorder. By using this method, there is a higher percentage of informed embryos by using only one embryonic cell. By using PGS, the chances of ongoing pregnancy rates are doubled and the results are also higher than that of FISH.
PGS result are obtained in 4 steps:
- Biopsy – when one embryonic cell is biopsied from each embryo.
- Tubing – when each cell is placed in specific tubes so as to avoid any kind of DNA contamination.
- Transportation – these tubes are then shipped with specific coolers that is provided in the kit.
- Result – in which the embryonic cell is analysed and it also specifies the number of normal embryos that can be transferred.
